Despite her family’s warnings to stay away from those connected with the ruling regime, she meets and falls in love with Ali, the handsome playboy of Damascus and son of a powerful general. Torn between family honor and true love, Laila finds herself in the midst of her own identity crisis in a country on the brink of revolution. The longer she stays in the City of Steel, a city built on their fathers’ sins and promises, a virgin’s paradise and the devil’s playground, the more she learns loyalty is everything.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like the meandering Missouri River nearby, the riveting history of Drake-Williams Steel flows through 125 years of the American industrial revolution mostly under the direction of one family with three sets of brothers. The venerable Hugh Williams joined a fledgling boiler company in 1897 about the time of the Trans-Mississippi Exposition. His sons Arthur and Walter operated the company through the Great Depression in an era of dragline buckets, boilers, and tanks. The company had built the largest and tallest smokestack and was proud of it. Arthur s sons Hugh (the author of this book) and Mike grew the company into the era of structural steel fabrication through boom-and-bust times in the construction industry. Today the company continues to expand under the able leadership of Hugh s sons David and John as Drake-Williams Steel supplies structural steel to help fuel Omaha's and the Midwest's upward growth and quite literally provides the framework for many of the area's most prominent buildings. This is not the story of buildings and structures, but of the strength and fortitude of strong men (and a few women) in a business that celebrates its 125th anniversary and has no intention of slowing down.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Iron and Steel. Ceramics. Dyes. Glass. Gold. All are important materials that have impacted civilization. In Ruth G. Kassinger's five-book Material World series, she traces the history and science of these important materials and tells how they are being used today. Ancient people of the Near East were the first to discover how to turn iron ore into wrought iron and then to fashion this sturdy metal into tools, weapons, and other implements. Later, blacksmiths learned to make iron into steel. In Iron and Steel: from Thor's Hammer to the Space Shuttle, Kassinger covers the history of iron and steel from early times to the present. She also relates some of the myths associated with these materials and explains the science behind their production and use. Book jacket.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Not all workers' needs were served by the union. Focusing on the steel works at Duquesne, Pennsylvania, a linchpin of the old Carnegie Steel Company empire and then of U.S. Steel, James D. Rose demonstrates the pivotal role played by a nonunion form of employee representation usually dismissed as a flimsy front for management interests. The early New Deal set in motion two versions of workplace representation that battled for supremacy: company-sponsored employee representation plans (ERPs) and independent trade unionism. At Duquesne, the cause of the unskilled, hourly workers, mostly eastern and southern Europeans as well as blacks, was taken up by the union -- the Fort Dukane Lodge of the Amalgamated Association of Iron, Steel, and Tin Workers. For skilled tonnage workers and skilled tradesmen, mainly U.S.-born and of northern and western European extraction, ERPs offered a better solution. Initially little more than a crude antiunion device, ERPs matured from tools of the company into semi-independent, worker-led organizations. Isolated from the union movement through the mid-1930s, ERP representatives and management nonetheless created a sophisticated bargaining structure that represented the shop-floor interests of the mill's skilled workforce. Meanwhile, the Amalgamated gave way to the Steel Workers Organizing Committee, a professionalized and tightly organized affiliate of John L. Lewis's CIO that expended huge resources trying to gain companywide unionization. Even when the SWOC secured a collective bargaining agreement with U.S. Steel in 1937, however, the Union was still unable to sign up a majority of the workforce at Duquesne. A sophisticated study of the forces that shaped and responded to workers' interests, Duquesne and the Rise of Steel Unionism confirms that what people did on the shop floor was as critical to the course of steel unionism as were corporate decision making and shifts in government policy.

Book excerpt: Stewart Dalton worked in the Sheffield Steel Industry from leaving school to the time of his final redundancy in the early 1990's. He brings to bear the light of experience, having been in the midst of the cataclysmic changes which took place from the early 1960's through to the time of his final separation from the industry. His fascinating account reads as much like a "ripping yarn" as the account of the demise of a vast industry. The stories of great companies and great men, led and mislead over the years are revealed. Government interference and the actions of "money men" in stripping the industry of skill and property. The book closes on a positive note, with the further development of special steels and the growth of the high quality cutlery industry. This book is a must for anyone interested in the history of the Steel Industry and the effects on the welfare of a great city, of its varying fortunes.
