Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book J. M. Balkin offers a strikingly original theory of cultural evolution, a theory that explains shared understandings, disagreement, and diversity within cultures. Drawing on many fields of study--including anthropology, evolutionary theory, cognitive science, linguistics, sociology, political theory, philosophy, social psychology, and law--the author explores how cultures grow and spread, how shared understandings arise, and how people of different cultures can understand and evaluate each other's views. Cultural evolution occurs through the transmission of cultural information and know-how--cultural software--in human minds, Balkin says. Individuals embody cultural software and spread it to others through communication and social learning. Ideology, the author contends, is neither a special nor a pathological form of thought but an ordinary product of the evolution of cultural software. Because cultural understanding is a patchwork of older imperfect tools that are continually adapted to solve new problems, human understanding is partly adequate and partly inadequate to the pursuit of justice. Balkin presents numerous examples that illuminate the sources of ideological effects and their contributions to injustice. He also enters the current debate over multiculturalism, applying his theory to problems of mutual understanding between people who hold different worldviews. He argues that cultural understanding presupposes transcendent ideals and shows how both ideological analysis of others and ideological self-criticism are possible.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In this book, Goriunova offers a critical analysis of the processes that produce digital culture. Digital cultures thrive on creativity, developing new forces of organization to overcome repetition and reach brilliance. In order to understand the processes that produce culture, the author introduces the concept of the art platform. An art platform is a specific configuration of creative passions, codes, events, individuals and works that are propelled by cultural currents and maintained through digitally native means. Art platforms can occur in numerous contexts bringing about genuinely new cultural production, that, given enough force, come together to sustain an open mechanism while negotiating social, technical and political modes of power.Amateur and folklore work, aesthetic forms of organization and geeky publics, creativity, freedom, and humour are reinterpreted in the theoretical apparatus offered in this book and tested through case studies derived globally. Software art, digital forms of literature, 8-bit music, 3D art forms, pro-surfers, and networks of geeks are test beds for enquiry into what brings and holds art platforms together. Goriunova provides new means of understanding the development of cultural forms on the Internet, placing the phenomena of participatory and social networks in a conceptual and historical perspective, and offering powerful tools for researching cultural phenomena overlooked by other approaches. This book an invaluable resource for scholars of digital media and cultural studies, and a readership involved in every kind of network culture."--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evolution has long shaped human behavior. Yet just recently have we learned that evolution based on natural selection is not the continuous process Darwin assumed. It is instead a two-part process of change and stability called punctuated equilibrium, with natural selection operating mainly on the frontiers of change. Taking account of biology's latest understanding of evolution, it becomes clear that culture evolves by a similar process. This is important because over the past 30,000 years most human evolution and the behavioral changes that go with it have occurred in our cultures-not in our genes. Knowing the process by which culture evolves clarifies the origin of many of our current problems, both within and between cultures. The author contends that new technology drives cultural evolution much as mutations change our DNA. The problem is that technology is now coming at us so fast that it is inducing "circuit overload" in cultures all over the world, leading to conflict. Techno-Cultural Evolution, which builds on the insights of such bestsellers as Jared Diamond's Guns, Germs, and Steel and Collapse, explains how this process works--and what it means for all of us.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The phenomenon of global organizations reminds us that cross-cultural management is more prevalent than ever. While it may not be possible to develop in-depth knowledge of all cultures, a person can develop a way of thinking where they integrate culture in all of their deliberations, decisions, and behaviors. Such an approach is transformative and involves adopting a cultural mindset, understanding culture’s power as a frame of reference, and developing a new way of thinking. The book The Cultural Mindset is based on Dr. Nahavandi’s years of teaching, researching, and consulting with many businesses on cross-cultural issues. Built around a think-know-do model, the text enables readers to adopt a cultural mindset that will effectively guide their thinking and behavior as future managers. Through case studies and self-assessments, the book allows students to develop a broader view of culture that is beyond learning skills and competencies. Additionally, by focusing on culture in general, the book allows readers to address both national cultural issues, such as how to work in another country or manage a multi-national team, and diversity issues, such as the glass ceiling or discrimination in the workplace. The key underlying theme for both topics is how culture, national or group-related, impacts our perspective – what we value, how we think, how we behave, and how we manage people effectively. Each chapter will include a focus on both informational and transformational learning through: Cases and examples that will question assumptions and emphasize applicability Self-assessments to make the concepts personal and relevant, and encourage self-reflection Examples to help students understand those concepts Specific exercises and/or reflections to help students apply information to their own personal and professional life

Book excerpt: This book explores how professional and organisational cultures influence global public-private partnerships, which form a key element of global governance. Using case studies, the partnerships of three international government organisations – the International Telecommunication Union, Interpol and the International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property – illustrate how partnerships are formed and operate in accordance with the accepted cultural beliefs and values associated with both profession and organisation. In brief, engineers create partnerships they are comfortable with, which are different in form and operation to those of police, which also differ from those of the conservator. This book will appeal to scholars of international relations, global governance, organisational studies and public administration. It also conveys lessons for professionals at the international level in international government organisations, business and civil society who engage in, or want to engage in global public-private partnerships.
