Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A vivid political history of the schemes, plots, maneuvers, and conspiracies that have attempted -- successfully and not -- to remove unwanted presidents To limit executive power, the founding fathers created fixed presidential terms of four years, giving voters regular opportunities to remove their leaders. Even so, Americans have often resorted to more dramatic paths to disempower the chief executive. The American presidency has seen it all, from rejecting a sitting president's renomination bid and undermining their authority in office to the more drastic methods of impeachment, and, most brutal of all, assassination. How to Get Rid of a President showcases the political dark arts in action: a stew of election dramas, national tragedies, and presidential departures mixed with party intrigue, personal betrayal, and backroom shenanigans. This briskly paced, darkly humorous voyage proves that while the pomp and circumstance of presidential elections might draw more attention, the way that presidents are removed teaches us much more about our political order.

Ross and published by e-artnow. This book was released on 2017-04-21 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Little is now known to the general public of the history of the attempt to remove President Andrew Johnson in 1868, on his impeachment by the House of Representatives and trial by the Senate for alleged high crimes and misdemeanors in office, or of the causes that led to it. Yet it was one of the most important and critical events, involving possibly the gravest consequences, in the entire history of the country. The constitutional power to impeach and remove the President had lain dormant since the organization of the Government, and apparently had never been thought of as a means for the satisfaction of political enmities or for the punishment of alleged executive misdemeanors, even in the many heated controversies between the President and Congress that had theretofore arisen. Nor would any attempt at impeachment have been made at that time but for the great numerical disparity then existing between the respective representatives in Congress of the two political parties of the country. Andrew Johnson was the 17th President of the United States, serving from 1865 to 1869. Johnson became president as he was vice president at the time of the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. The new president favored quick restoration of the seceded states to the Union. His plans did not give protection to the former slaves, and he came into conflict with the Republican-dominated Congress, culminating in his impeachment by the House of Representatives. He was the first American president to be impeached, in the Senate by one vote.

Book excerpt: The nation has been shocked by the simultaneous murder of the President and all his successors, except for Ben Silver, an unpopular Cabinet Secretary. Silver, who many believe was involved in the murders, is the new president. A stunned Congress and Federal Bureaucracy are determined to get rid of Silver by any and all means possible. They are joined by Islamic jihadists who fear and hate Silver for religious and other reasons. The assassin who killed the former president offers to assist Silver as a double agent from within the jihadist movement. As the President attempts to prevent the country from collapsing into chaos, he must wrestle with the problems of accepting the intelligence assistance offered by the assassin. The assassin must himself wrestle with maintaining his position within the Islamic community, if he does in fact perform as offered. While practically everyone believes the assassin is dead, a very corrupt F.B.I. acting director and a woman who thinks she may be in love with the assassin are not so sure and both try to find him for their very different reasons.

Book excerpt: When an explosion rips through the home of Gulf War veteran Clarence Davenport, Secret Service Agent John Wallace and White House aide Molly Pemberton are certain that Davenport, the assassin who killed President Butler, had killed himself. President Silver, the former Education Secretary who became President when Davenport killed all other legal successors to the Presidency, informs the nation that the crime of the century has been solved and that the perpetrator is dead, only to have to admit, days later, that Davenport had escaped. National outrage at Davenport's escape escalates, fueled by Senator Jeb Davies' political ambition and his hatred of Ben Silver. Davenport, the world's most sought after fugitive, with no other place to go, is recruited by Saudi expatriates opposed to the Royal Family and ends up in an Al Qaeda training camp where he devises another plan to kill President Silver and attack the United States. Silver tries to stave off the rising tide of impeachment and at the same time combat the increasing risk of a terrorist attack that will destroy the Presidency and fundamentally change the Unites States unless he can avoid impeachment and intercept the threat. " timely as this evening's news " -Melannie Lauers, Cape Cod Times(on After Kamisiyah) " an intriguing insight " -Mathew Call, Newton Tab (on After Kamisiyah)
