In this book, Arie Elshout provides tender encouragement to such sensitive souls. Distinguishing between the assurance of faith and the assurance of sense, Elshout reminds us that weak faith is faith nonetheless. Wise pastoral counsel is also given on areas of self-examination and the distinguishing marks of true grace. Here is a helping hand extended to all who are sorry for their sins and take refuge in Christ, and a reminder that the Lord desires to comfort and refresh penitent sinners with the gospel promises of His Table.

Like the author’s previous work on Baptism, this will become a standard work about the Eucharist and Eucharistic theology worldwide. The book, a study of the history and theology of the Eucharist, is the fifth volume in the SCM Studies in Worship and Liturgy series and will help to establish the series as a place for landmark books of liturgical scholarship.

Book excerpt: Since the Lima Declarations of Convergence in 1982, no other document in the international ecumenical movement has dealt with Eucharistic communion at the celebration of the Lord's Supper in remembrance of the Holy Sacrifice of Jesus Christ. On the occasion of the 11th Assembly of the World Council of Churches in 2022 in Karlsruhe, ecumenically minded Protestant, Free Church, Old Catholic, Roman Catholic and Orthodox theologians from Germany have taken up this topic afresh. They provide insights into the current state of ecumenical conversations, present the various traditions of confessional worship and offer practical suggestions for an ecumenically sensitive liturgical practice. The German Ecumenical Study Committee (DÖSTA) contributes a joint statement on the subject. Memories of the 3rd Ecumenical Kirchentag (Church Congress) 2021 in Frankfurt am Main are revived. The decision to go to the Lord's Table together, trusting in the presence of Jesus Christ in the celebration of Holy Communion, Eucharist and Holy Sacrifice, can be justified theologically, but continues to raise controversy. On the Sunday of the Assembly in Karlsruhe, September 4, 2022, a rich range of liturgies will commemorate the life of Jesus, his death for us, and the sending of God's Spirit. Together, all churches testify that ``The love of Christ moves, reconciles and unites the world.''

Book excerpt: In Remembrance of Christ challenges Christians to live sacrificially in view of who Christ is and what He meant when He adjourned His disciples to do this in remembrance of Me. Such attitudinal understanding will help Christians to live a more overcoming life, especially in the areas of obedience, forgiveness, sacrifice, and holiness. Remembering a person helps us to relate to, and reflect on, the persons beliefs, philosophies, legacies, contributions and achievements in life. It also helps us to aspire to live up to those values the individual believed in during his or her lifetime. This book will also direct our attention to other ramifications of Christs death, the importance of His blood, divine healing, feeding His sheep, proclaiming His death etc. Chapter 1 introduces readers to the general world of remembrances, highlighting key historical world and American personalities, landmarks and memorials, and showing how Jesus legacy is the only one that has eternal and all-inclusive values in comparison. Chapter 2 discusses divine healing aspect of Jesus passion from the perspective of it being one of the key benefits of Gods children when we remember Him as He commanded. Chapter 3 discusses the subject of sacrificial forgiveness as a practice Christians should engage in from two key perspectives: forgiveness as God gave it to mankind, and forgiveness as we must give it to our neighbors. Chapter 4 delves into the subject of loving Jesus more than these as addressed to Peter in John chapter 21. The topic of feeding Gods sheep is discussed in chapter 5. Chapter 6 is designed to show readers that there are other areas of life in which we can remember Jesus as living sacrifices. Chapter 7 is designed for all persons who desire to receive Christ as their Lord and Savior.

Book excerpt: ""My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior."" Luke 1:46 & 47 We live in a world where life often seems to have no rhyme or reason. There is so much discord, hatred and confusion. With this lack of harmony, we may ask ourselves, ÒWhere is the Lord our Divine Composer?Ó Then, above all the chaos in the stillness of your heart, there are words so loud you need to listen; there may even be a desire to write them down. It is not the volume I describe, but the intensity of awareness that comes with God's Òstill small voiceÓ which billows, ÒYou are not alone.Ó His Voice is incomparable, for it permeates with His Love. God's Love like a mighty wave saturating your soul, like a rolling flame consuming your heart. And to His Love we all must respond...

Should we or should we not serve a meal, an Agape meal, at the Lord's Table? This author contends that we should. For the Lord's Supper is to be a clear presentation of the Gospel itself. A genuine CELEBRATION [versus a funeral-like atmosphere] of the forgiveness of our Sin Debt and a rejoicing over our salvation, our "passing from death unto life." And our JOYFUL anticipation of Christ's imminent return. The issues of the Christian's ministry to the poorer of the brethren, what we can eat and drink at the Lord's Table and publicly [Christian Liberty] is clearly spelled out and amplified in this easy to read exposition of the Lord's Supper. A Must Read for Christians of all denominations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On August 28, 1955, fourteen-year-old Chicago native Emmett Till was brutally beaten to death for allegedly flirting with a white woman at a grocery store in Money, Mississippi. Roy Bryant and J. W. Milam were acquitted of murdering Till and dumping his body in the Tallahatchie River, and later that year, an all-white grand jury chose not to indict the men on kidnapping charges. A few months later, Bryant and Milam admitted to the crime in an interview with the national media. They were never convicted. Although Till's body was mutilated, his mother ordered that his casket remain open during the funeral service so that the country could observe the results of racially motivated violence in the Deep South. Media attention focused on the lynching fanned the flames of regional tension and impelled many individuals -- including Rosa Parks -- to become vocal activists for racial equality. In this innovative study, Darryl Mace explores media coverage of Till's murder and provides a close analysis of the regional and racial perspectives that emerged. He investigates the portrayal of the trial in popular and black newspapers in Mississippi and the South, documents posttrial reactions, and examines Till's memorialization in the press to highlight the media's role in shaping regional and national opinions. Provocative and compelling, In Remembrance of Emmett Till provides a valuable new perspective on one of the sparks that ignited the civil rights movement.

Book excerpt: Volume 54 Sermons 3073-3124 Charles Spurgeon (19 June 1834 – 31 January 1892) is one of the church’s most famous preachers and Christianity’s foremost prolific writers. Called the “Prince of Preachers,” he was one of England's most notable ministers for most of the second half of the nineteenth century, and he still remains highly influential among Christians of different denominations today. His sermons have spread all over the world, and his many printed works have been cherished classics for decades. In his lifetime, Spurgeon preached to more than 10 million people, often up to ten times each week. He was the pastor of the congregation of the New Park Street Chapel (later the Metropolitan Tabernacle) in London for 38 years. He was an inexhaustible author of various kinds of works including sermons, commentaries, an autobiography, as well as books on prayer, devotionals, magazines, poetry, hymns and more. Spurgeon was known to produce powerful sermons of penetrating thought and divine inspiration, and his oratory and writing skills held his audiences spellbound. Many Christians have discovered Spurgeon's messages to be among the best in Christian literature. Edward Walford wrote in Old and New London: Volume 6 (1878) quoting an article from the Times regarding one of Spurgeon’s meetings at Surrey: “Fancy a congregation consisting of 10,000 souls, streaming into the hall, mounting the galleries, humming, buzzing, and swarming—a mighty hive of bees—eager to secure at first the best places, and, at last, any place at all. After waiting more than half an hour—for if you wish to have a seat you must be there at least that space of time in advance—Mr. Spurgeon ascended his tribune. To the hum, and rush, and trampling of men, succeeded a low, concentrated thrill and murmur of devotion, which seemed to run at once, like an electric current, through the breast of every one present, and by this magnetic chain the preacher held us fast bound for about two hours. It is not my purpose to give a summary of his discourse. It is enough to say of his voice, that its power and volume are sufficient to reach every one in that vast assembly; of his language, that it is neither high-flown nor homely; of his style, that it is at times familiar, at times declamatory, but always happy, and often eloquent; of his doctrine, that neither the 'Calvinist' nor the 'Baptist' appears in the forefront of the battle which is waged by Mr. Spurgeon with relentless animosity, and with Gospel weapons, against irreligion, cant, hypocrisy, pride, and those secret bosom-sins which so easily beset a man in daily life; and to sum up all in a word, it is enough to say of the man himself, that he impresses you with a perfect conviction of his sincerity.” More than a hundred years after his death, Charles Spurgeon’s legacy continues to effectively inspire the church around the world. For this reason, Delmarva Publications has chosen to publish the complete works of Charles Spurgeon.
