Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Václav Polívka (1927-1971) was born into Czechoslovakia's elite, roughly eight years after the country emerged from the ruins of Austria-Hungary. In this diary, which was found in an attic in Oslo, Norway in 2012, the young medical student with a strong interest in classical music describes three crucial years for Europe, which, beginning in 1945, was moving from World War with Nazi occupation to Cold War with communist dictatorship. In the summers of 1946 and 1947, Václav travels to Denmark, where he meets a young Danish woman, Vibeke Hauer, with whom he falls in love, and later marries. In this respect, Václav Polivka's diary is a Czech-Nordic love story with a happy ending. But Czechoslovakia would not enjoy such good fortune. Almost immediately after the country was liberated, Polívka expresses his doubts about the intentions of the Russians. He realizes early on that indoctrination, censorship, and outright lies do not bode well for the future of freedom, and he shares his thoughts with surprising clarity in the pages of his diary.

Book excerpt: Many studies of African-American gospel music spotlight history and style. This one, however, is focused mainly on grassroots makers and singers. Most of those included here are not stars. A few have received national recognition, but most are known only in their own home areas. Yet their collective stories presented in this book indicate that black gospel music is one of the most prevalent forms of contemporary American song. Its author Alan Young is a New Zealander who came to the South seeking authentic blues music. Instead, he found gospel to be the most pervasive, fundamental music in the contemporary African-American South. Blues, he concludes, has largely lost touch with its roots, while gospel continues to express authentic resources.Conducting interviews with singers and others in the gospel world of Tennessee and Mississippi, Young ascertains that gospel is firmly rooted in community life. Woke Me Up This Morning includes his candid, widely varied conversations with a capella groups, with radio personalities, with preachers, and with soloists whose performances reveal the diversity of gospel styles. Major figures interviewed include the Spirit of Memphis Quartet and the Reverend Willie Morganfield, author and singer of the million-selling What Is This? who turned his back on fame in order to pastor a church in the heart of the Mississippi Delta. All speak freely in oral-history style here, telling how they became involved in gospel music and religion, how it enriches their lives, how it is connected to secular music (especially blues), and how the spiritual and the practical are united in their performances. Their accounts reveal the essential grassroots force andspirit of gospel music and demonstrate that if blues springs from America's soul, then gospel arises from its heart.

(Oliver James,Contact Magazine) A novel and comprehensive approach to transferring from the C to F instrument. 430 music examples include folk and national songs (some in two parts), country dance tunes and excerpts from the standard treble repertoire of•Bach, Barsanti, Corelli, Handel, Telemann, etc. An outstanding feature of the book has proved to be Brian Bonsor's brilliantly simple but highly effective practice circles and recognition squares designed to give, in only a few minutes, concentrated practice on the more usual leaps to and from each new note and instant recognition of random notes. Quickly emulating the outstanding success of the descant tutors, these books are very popular even with those who normally use tutors other than the Enjoy the Recorder series.

Download My Happy Life PDF Format Full Free by Darius Milhaud and published by Marion Boyars. This book was released on 1995 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Darius Milhaud, born in Provence in 1892, was one of the major composers of the twentieth century and also one of its most prodigious. Over 450 of his works have been catalogued (and listed in this volume), including operas, large and small, eighteen string quartets, twelve symphonies and thirty concertos, as well as such popular classics as Le Boeuf sur le toit, La Creation du monde, Suite provencal and the Suite francaise. In My Happy Life, completed in 1972, two years before the composer's death, Milhaud tells the full story of his own personal life and artistic development. A secretary to the playwright Paul Claudel, a close friend of Satie, Cocteau and Igor Stravinsky, Darius Milhaud was also a member, along with Georges Auric and Arthur Honneger, of the scandalous group of young French composers known simply as 'les Six.' While often regarded during his lifetime as an open-minded musician of wide tastes whose music spanned many styles from avant-garde to jazz, he is revealed here as a thinker of note and a graceful writer. He depicts with great generosity of feeling the revolution that modern music has undergone this century and his own role in it, giving a clear account of his attitude towards his work and that of his fellow composers.
