Book excerpt: James Madison: Philosopher, Founder, and Statesman presents fresh scholarship on the philosophical statesman who served as the nation’s fourth president and who is often called both the father of the U.S. Constitution and the father of the Bill of Rights. These essays by historians and political scientists from the United States and abroad focus on six distinct aspects of Madison’s life and work: his personality and development as a statesman; his work at the Constitutional Convention of 1787 and contributions to larger constitutional design; his advocacy for the adoption of the Bill of Rights; his controversial role as a party leader; his presidency; and his life after leaving office. James Madison continues to be regarded as one of America’s great political theorists, a man who devoted his life to, and who found fulfill- ment in, public service. His philosophical contributions remain vital to any understanding of the modern American polity. This book will be of great interest to political scientists and theorists, as well as to historians of early American history and politics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How does recent scholarship on ethnicity and race speak to the Jewish dimension of James Joyce’s writing? What light has Joyce himself already cast on the complex question of their relationship? This book poses these questions in terms of models of the other drawn from psychoanalytic and cultural studies and from Jewish cultural studies, arguing that in Joyce the emblematic figure of otherness is "the Jew.” The work of Emmanuel Levinas, Sander Gilman, Gillian Rose, Homi Bhabha, among others, is brought to bear on the literature, by Jews and non-Jews alike, that has forged the representation of Jews and Judaism in this century. Joyce was familiar with this literature, like that of Theodor Herzl. Joyce sholarship has largely neglected even these sources, however, including Max Nordau, who contributed significantly to the philosophy of Zionism, and the literature on the "psychobiology” of race--so prominent in the fin de siècle--all of which circulates around and through Joyce’s depictions of Jews and Jewishness. Several Joyce scholars have shown the significance of the concept of the other for Joyce’s work and, more recently, have employed a variety of approaches from within contemporary deliberations of the ideology of race, gender, and nationality to illuminate its impact. The author combines these approaches to demonstrate how any modern characterization of otherness must be informed by historical representations of "the Jew” and, consequently, by the history of anti-Semitism. She does so through a thematics and poetics of Jewishness that together form a discourse and method for Joyce’s novel.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this guide Margaret Aymer introduces the letter of James, countering arguments that it is of limited theological value and significance for early Christianity. Aymer focuses on James' theology of God's divine singularity and immutability, and of God's relationship to the community as father and benefactor. These are theological foundations for its emphasis on community actions of belief, humility and mutual care. Aymer introduces and examines the letter's stand against empire, not least in regard to wealth. Divine power is envisioned as an alternative power to that of the Romans, though in some respects it can seem equally brutal. Aymer concludes by focusing on those addressed by James's homily, the exiles in diaspora. Engaging the psychology of migration, she unpacks the migrant strategy underlying James's call to living 'unstained'. Finally, Aymer encourages student to ask what it might mean now for twenty-first-century people to take seriously a separatist migrant discourse not only as an interesting ancient writing but as a scripture, a lens through which its readers can glimpse the possibilities for how lives are to be lived, and how contemporary worlds can be interpreted and engaged?

Its translators were intelligent, godly, and untarnished by the corruption of the modern world. If you want to know who God is and what he is like, read how he is described in the King James Bible.

Book excerpt: While Henry James had little interest in formal aesthetics per se, he was a dedicated artist and student of art from the earliest stage of his career. He was concerned not only with exploring the technical possibilities of his craft, but also with understanding the nature and function of the creative process itself. Consequently, his writings evince a preoccupation with such matters as the relation of art to experience, the importance of aesthetic perceptions for art, the operation of feeling in the creative process and in the work of art. Other questions of an aesthetic nature, specifically related to the process of expression, concerned James. They dealt with the dramatic development of the substance of a work and the organic nature of its form. These matters are dealt with in the first six chapters of this study. Chapter Seven attempts to illustrate the relation of James's "method" to his aesthetic theories by a discussion of his highly characteristic use of a ghostly element, ambiguity, and a sense of the past. Chapter Eight is concerned with James's concept of prose as an aesthetic medium. The last two chapters deal with aesthetic considerations underlying James's deep concern with the relation of the artist to his work and to society. This study deals with all the major aspects of James's aesthetics. The selection of material has been determined by his interest in aesthetic matters as this was manifested in his writing throughout his career. All references are to James's works, and the terminology is that employed by Jam es himself in what is, viewed as a whole, perhaps the most lucid and thorough analysis in any language by an artist of his art.
