Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Established in 1871 on the outskirts of London, the Royal Indian Engineering College at Coopers Hill was arguably the first engineering school in Britain. For thirty-five years the college helped staff the government institutions of British India responsible for the railways, irrigation systems, telegraph network, and forests. Founded to meet the high demand for engineers in that country, it was closed thirty-five years later because its educational innovations had been surpassed by Britain’s universities – on both occasions against the wishes of the Government of India. Imperial Engineers offers a complete history of the Royal Indian Engineering College. Drawing on the diaries of graduates working in India, the college magazine, student and alumni periodicals, and other archival documents, Richard Hornsey details why the college was established and how the students’ education prepared them for their work. Illustrating the impact of the college and its graduates in India and beyond, Imperial Engineers illuminates the personal and professional experiences of British men in India as well as the transformation of engineering education at a time of social and technological change.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Minutes of Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers, 1899, Vol. 136: With Other Selected and Abstracted Papers IN responding to an invitation to present to the Institution a Paper on the subject of ventilation, the Author has been impelled by his experience of the great evils which result from the apathy and ignorance so frequently displayed in regard to this question. N o attempt is made to deal with the matter exhaustively, which would involve the introduction of many details which lie outside the province of the civil engineer; the Author therefore trusts that, in this respect, the Paper will evoke discussion by those who can deal more fully with points which are only incidentally referred to by him. Excerpt: ...which can be appropriately denominated a course of teaching. Its members must be men who have both learnt and effectively practised their profession before they join. I do not doubt that membership is accompanied with a certain amount of prestige which may prove to be of service to the member in his professional career; but I believe that the same result would attend membership of any society which effectively promoted a branch of science intimately connected with the profession or business in which the member was engaged. That there is a science of civil engineering, and that its development is of the utmost consequence to our national interests, are to my mind propositions not admitting of dispute. I would not for a moment suggest that a society which devotes its funds to giving concerts for the entertainment of members and their friends, promotes the science of music, or that the cause of literature is advanced by the establishment of a reading room for subscribing members. The main, if not the sole object of such societies, is to amuse or instruct individual members. But I can discover no real analogy between societies of that kind and the Institution of Civil Engineers. The discussion of mechanical and engineering problems, by the members of the institution, cannot fail to elicit information and speculation of value to the profession at large, and of advantage to all interested in the various departments of the science, for whose use everything read or spoken by members is recorded in the printed minutes, and constitutes a substantial addition to the sum of human knowledge. It occurs to me that, if any one were asked to say what would be a more efficient method of promoting engineering science than that which the Institution has...

Book excerpt: This study provides a history of the Port of Liverpool between 1905 and 1938, during its decline. It is particularly interested in the history of the Mersey Docks and Harbour Board, Liverpool's enormous and sole port authority. Adrian Jarvis contrasts the decision-making process of the Board with the financial history of the docks, in attempt to evaluate the Board successes and failures. The study accounts for and explores the factors which contributed to the decline of Liverpool's shipping industry, with topics ranging from the growth of railways, the advances in shipping technology, the success of commercial liners, to the Great Depression and Great War. The study is complemented with an appendix exploring the efficiency of ports; a bibliography; a note on the sources; an index; and a conclusion that asserts the overall merit of the Mersey Docks and Harbour Board when considering the tremendous and often unpredictable challenges the Board faced, such as wartime disruption.

Book excerpt: The subject of earth pressure is one of the oldest and most extensive chapters in soil mechanics and foundation engineering and is one of the pillars of structural engineering. First the development of earth pressure theory is comprehensively described. The descriptions range from the first approaches to the determination of earth pressure through continuum mechanical earth pressure models to the integration of earth pressure research into the disciplinary structure of geotechnics. The main part of the book comprises a selection of current calculation basics. The aim is to provide a collection of working instructions for foundation and structural engineers in construction companies, consultants and in building supervision as well as students. In order to further theoretical understanding, the essential basics of the determination of earth pressure are first presented. Then the most important processes for active and passive earth pressure and at-rest earth pressure for practical application are dealt with, with spatial effects also being taken into account. The book sets out to provide brief information about rarely encountered questions with references to further literature. In recent years, the dependency of earth pressure on displacement has been paid ever more attention. This applies not just to the passive but also to the active case. Questions are repeatedly passed to the DIN committee "calculation processes". A selection of these is dealt with in the commentary to DIN 4085, which came out in September 2018. The history of earth pressure theory is supplemented by 40 selected short biographies of scientists and practical engineers, who have taken up the subject and further developed it over the years. The book also has two appendices with terms, formula symbols and indices as well as earth pressure tables.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Floods constitute a persistent and serious problem throughout the United States and many other parts of the world. They are responsible for losses amounting to billions of dollars and scores of deaths annually. Virtually all parts of the nation--coastal, moun tainous and rural--are affected by them. Two aspects of the problem of flooding that have long been topics of scientific inquiry are flood frequency and risk analyses. Many new, even improved, tech niques have recently been developed for performing these analyses. Nevertheless, actual experience points out that the frequency of say a 100-year flood, in lieu of being encountered on the average once in one hundred years, may be as little as once in 25 years. It is therefore appropriate to pause and ask where we are, where we are going and where we ought to be going with regard to the technology of flood frequency and risk analyses. One way to address these ques tions is to provide a forum where people from all quarters of the world can assemble, discuss and share their experience and expertise pertaining to flood frequency and risk analyses. This is what con stituted the motivation for organizing the International Symposium on Flood Frequency and Risk Analyses held May 14-17, 1986, at Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book W. O. Henderson has brought together in English translation the journals of four foreign visitors who travelled in England and Scotland in the years immediately following the Napoleonic wars, in a way which may be regarded as a sequel to his recent book on J. C. Fischer’s diaries of industrial Britain. Two of the travellers whose journals are included in this volume were Swiss industrialists. Hans Caspar Escher was both a professional architect and the founder of the famous engineering firm of Esther Wyss of Zürich, Bodmer, also of Zürich, lived in England for many years and was recognised as an inventor of genius. The other accounts of industrial Britain in the Regency era are a report by the Prussian Factory Commissioner May and a short survey of the Newcastle upon Tyne colliery railways by the French government engineer Louis de Gallois. The four diaries show how informed foreign visitors were impressed by the way in which Britain had survived the perils of Napoleon’s Continental System and was now forging ahead to consolidate her position as the workshop of the world. This book was first published in 1968.
