How is it possible to feel pain in a limb or some other body part that has been surgically removed? Phantom pain develops among people who have lost a limb or a breast or have had internal organs removed. It also occurs in people with totally transected spinal cords. Unfortunately, phantom pain is a medical night mare. Many of the people reporting phantom pain make dispropor tionately heavy use of the medical system because their severe pains are usually not treated successfully. The effect on quality of life can be devas tating. Phantom pain has been reported at least since 1545 (Weir Mitchell as related by Nathanson, 1988) and/ or experienced by such diverse people as Admiral Lord Nelson and Ambroise Pare (Melzack & Wall, 1982; Davis, 1993). The folklore surrounding phantom pain is fascinating and mirrors the concepts about how our bodies work that are in vogue at any particu lar time. Most of the stories relate to phantom limbs and date from the mid-1800s. The typical story goes like this: A man who had his leg ampu tated complained about terrible crawling, twitching feelings in his leg. His friends found out where the leg was buried, dug it up, and found maggots eating it. They burned it, and the pain stopped. Another man complained of a swollen feeling with frequent stinging or biting pains.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Phantom Limbs and Body Integrity Identity Disorder discusses the conditions of Phantom Limb Syndrome and Body Integrity Identity Disorder together for the first time, exploring examples from literature, film, and psychoanalysis to re-ground theories of the body in material experience. The book outlines the ways in which PLS and BIID involve a feeling of rupture underlined by a desire for wholeness, using the metaphor of the mirror-box (a therapeutic device that alleviates phantom limb pain) to examine how fiction is fundamentally linked to our physical and psychical realities. Using diverse examples from theoretical and fictional works, including thinkers such as Sigmund Freud, Jacques Lacan, Maurice Blanchot, D.W. Winnicott, and Georges Perec, and films by Powell and Pressburger and Quentin Tarantino, each chapter offers a detailed exploration of the mind/body relationship and experiences of fragmentation, bodily ownership, and symbolic reconstitution. By tracing these concepts, the monograph demonstrates ways in which fiction can enable us to understand the psychosomatic conditions of PLS and BIID more thoroughly, while providing new ways of reading psychoanalysis, literary theory, and fictional works. The first book to analyse BIID in relation to PLS, Phantom Limbs and Body Integrity Identity Disorder will be essential reading for academics and literary readers interested in the body, psychoanalysis, English literature, literary theory, film, and disability.

This result led me to investigate the different beliefs of each of these cultures; in the myths and legend that for years have become an indecipherable riddle. For these different ethnic groups that complements in my DNA 24% of the Native American race, 14% of the African-American race, and 19% of the Spanish race. Which directly or indirectly allowed me to enter into the unknown and paranormal world and at the same time inspired me to write a story that dealt with the mythological legend of phantoms, witches, the living dead and psychic that decorates and defines the novel of The Phantom of The Golden Harp.

Book excerpt: This volume of the Textbook of Military Medicine addresses the delivery of mental health services during wartime. The foreseeable future of the U.S. military includes the potential for involvement in a variety of conflicts, ranging from peace-keeping missions to massive deployments of personnel and materiel and possible nuclear, biological, and chemical threats as was seen in the Persian Gulf War. The medical role in wartime is critical to success of the mission. For the mental health disciplines, this role encompasses identification and elimination of unfit personnel, improvement of marginal personnel to standards of acceptability, prevention of psychiatric casualties, and their treatment when prevention fails. All of these efforts must be guided by past experience and sound principles of human behavior.

Book excerpt: A study was made to obtain information that could be used to evaluate the protection afforded by residences against radiation due to fallout. The sources used were Co60 and Cs137, and the radiation dosimeters used were pocket type ionization chambers. Measurements were made for distributed sources (400 Co60 and 20 Cs037) and for single sources located inside the structures (one each, 2-curie Co60 and Cs137). Attenuation measurements were made for five houses of typical domestic design and construction. Several modifications were made to the houses, and the attenuation measurements were repeated. The houses, located at the Nevada Test Site, included single- and two-story houses with and without basements and with light and heavy walls. For comparison with the house data the dose-rate distribution above an extended plane source was measured in a "phantom" house, i.e., air measurements with the instrument fixed on a framework of thin- walled aluminum tubing. Although the complete analysis of the data is not yet available, some typical analyses are presented, and the effectiveness of some of the modifications is illustrated.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development of equipment capable of producing and monitoring safe, effective and predictable hyperthermia treatments represents a major challenge. The main problem associated with any heating technique is the need to adjust and control the distribution of absorbed power in the tissue during treatment. Power distribution is considered adequate only when tumor tissue can be maintained at the required hyperthermic levels while, at the same time, healthy tissue is not overheated. This problem is particularly crucial when external heating devices are used to produce hyperthermia. Ex ternal hyperthermia refers to those methods which supply heat to tumor tissue in an external, noninvasive manner, as opposed to internal hyperther mia by which heat is supplied to tumor tissue in situ. Until recently, most of the technical developments and clinical trials of ther motherapy for superficial and deep tumors have been based on elec tromagnetic systems. Presently, there is increasing interest in the use of ultra sound to accomplish these goals. Electromagnetic techniques of external thermotherapy include radiative, capacitive, and, to a lesser extent, inductive procedures. Recent designs for radiative applicators have incorporated microstrip structures. These have the advantage of being compact and lightweight compared with dielectrically loaded waveguide applicators.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the interaction of living matter with photons, neutrons, charged particles, electrons and ions. The authors are specialists in the field of radiation protection. The book synthesizes many years of experiments with external radiation exposure in the fields of dosimetry and radiation shielding in medical, industrial and research fields. It presents the basic physical concepts including dosimetry and offers a number of tools to be used by students, engineers and technicians to assess the radiological risk and the means to avoid them by calculating the appropriate shields. The theory of radiation interaction in matter is presented together with empirical formulas and abacus. Numerous numerical applications are treated to illustrate the different topics. The state of the art in radiation protection and dosimetry is presented in detail, especially in the field of simulation codes for external exposure to radiation, medical projects and advanced research. Moreover, important data spread in different up to date references are presented in this book. The book deals also with accelerators, X-rays facilities, sealed sources, dosimetry, Monte Carlo simulation and radiation regulation. Each chapter is split in two parts depending on the level of details the readers want to focus on. The first part, accessible to a large public, provides a lot of simple examples to help understanding the physics concepts under radiation external exposure. The second part, called “Additional Information” is not mandatory; it aims on explaining topics more deeply, often using mathematical formulations. The book treats fundamental radiometric and dosimetric quantities to describe the interaction in materials under the aspects of absorbed dose processes in tissues. Definitions and applications on limited and operational radiation protection quantities are given. An important aspect are practical engineering tools in industrial, medical and research domains. Source characterization and shielding design are addressed. Also more ”exotic” topics, such as ultra intense laser and new generation accelerators, are treated. The state of the art is presented to help the reader to work with the book in a self-consistent way. The basic knowledge necessary to apply Monte Carlo methods in the field of radiation protection and dosimetry for external radiation exposure is provided. Coverage of topics such as variance reduction, pseudo-random number generation and statistic estimators make the book useful even to experienced Monte Carlo practitioners. Solved problems help the reader to understand the Monte Carlo process. The book is meant to be used by researchers, engineers and medical physicist. It is also valuable to technicians and students.

Book excerpt: The majority of amputations in the western world today are due to vascular disease. Despite the advances in surgical treatment of this disease, particularly by reconstruction, it is a sad fact that the number of amputations performed in these countries each year for vascular disease is increasing. Most of these amputees are elderly and their life expectancy is short, so it is important that the treatment and rehabilitation that they receive is informed, appropriate, efficient and swift to enable them to return successfully to life in the community for their remaining years. Management of this group of patients has proved to be successful only if a multidisciplinary team approach is adopted. Until recently in the UK, this approach sadly has only been implemented by a few centres. However, with the publication of the McColl report into the prosthetic and wheelchair service in 1986, interest in the care of the amputee is growing throughout the country. This book covers all aspects of amputation from disease and diagnosis to rehabilitation and community discharge with emphasis on the man agerneut of the largest group, the vascular lower limb amputee. A team approach is described and emphasized as being essential for good results and subsequent successful return into the community. The role of each of the important disciplines is described in relation to the appropriate part of the rehabilitation phase.
