Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trumpets in the Mountains is a compelling ethnography about Cuban culture, artistic performance, and the shift in national identity after 1990, when the loss of Soviet subsidies plunged Cuba into a severe economic crisis. The state's response involved opening the economy to foreign capital and tourism, and promoting previously deprecated cultural practices as quintessentially Cuban. Such contradictions of Cuba's revolutionary ideals elicited an official preoccupation with how twenty-first-century cubanía, or Cubanness, was to be understood by its citizens and creatively interpreted by its artists. The rural campesino was re-envisioned as a key symbol of the future; the embodiment of socialist humility, cultural pureness, and educated refinement; potentially the Hombre Novísimo (even newer man) to replace the Hombre Nuevo (new man) of Cuban communist philosophy. Campesinos inhabit some of the island's most isolated areas, including the mountainous regions in central and eastern Cuba where Laurie A. Frederik conducted research among rural communities and professional theater groups. Analyzing the ongoing dialogue of cultural officials, urban and rural artists, and campesinos, Frederik provides an on-the-ground account of how visions of the nation are developed, manipulated, dramatized, and maintained in public consciousness. She shows that cubanía is defined, and redefined, in the interactive movement between intellectual, political, and everyday worlds.

Book excerpt: An inspiring exploration of the goddesses of the West African spiritual traditions and their role in shaping Yoruba (Ifa), Santeria, Haitian Vodoun, and New Orleans Voodoo. Throughout Africa and beyond in the diaspora caused by the slave trade, the divine feminine was revered in the forms of goddesses like the ancient Nana Buluku, water spirits like Yemaya, Oshun, and Mami Wata, and the warrior Oya. The power of these goddesses and spirit beings has taken root in the West. New Orleans, for example, is the home of Marie Laveau, who used her magical powers to become the “Voodoo Queen” of New Orleans. Orishas, Goddesses, and Voodoo Queens shows you how to celebrate and cultivate the traits of these goddesses, drawing upon their strengths to empower your own life. In addition to offering a guided tour of the key goddesses of the African religious traditions, the book offers magical spells, rituals, potions, astrological correspondences, sacred offerings, and much more to help guide you on your own transformational journey.

Carlos Delacruz is used to being caught in the middle of things: both as an inbetweener, trapped somewhere between life and death, and as a double agent for the Council. But as his friends begin preparing for an unnatural war against the ghouls in charge, he realizes that more is on the line than ever before—not only for the people he cares about, but for every single soul in Brooklyn, alive or otherwise...

Book excerpt: A guide to the history, beliefs, rituals, and culture of a religious tradition that, despite persecution, suppression, and its own secretive nature, has close to a million adherents in the United States alone. Santería is a religion with Afro-Cuban roots, rising out of the cultural clash between the Yoruba people of West Africa and the Spanish Catholics who brought them to the Americas as slaves. With the exile of thousands of Cubans after Castro's revolution in 1959, Santería came to the United States, where it is gradually coming to be recognized as a legitimate faith tradition, one about which most people in America's mainstream know very little. De La Torre explains the worldview, myths, rituals, and history of Santería, and discusses what role the religion typically plays in the life of its practitioners as well as the cultural influence it continues to exert in Latin American communities today.--From publisher description.

Book excerpt: The Yoruba nation has its beginnings in the founding of Ile Ife. As the centuries passed, this state expanded, even absorbing the small kingdoms and peoples that surrounded it. Ile Ife was founded by a king named Oduduwa, also known as Obalufe; His sons and descendants formed a dynasty of kings who were deified and subsequently transformed into Orishas. The Orishas were mortal, who, for some reason, became divine individuals, deified by their people given their actions. Almost all the Orishas were in life kings of the Yoruba nation, great warriors, and reformers of civilization. Through time, uniting to these Orishas has been achieved through the Yoruba religion, which has become the fundamental foundation of culture and lifestyle in much of the world. In this way, grow the faith, respect, love, and loyalty for the following Yoruba Gods.

The book was written following what intelligence services call a CPP (short for Comprehensive Personality Profile), similar to the ones intelligence services keep on foreign leaders. It focuses on different aspects of Castro's actions and personality which, for some reasons, have been either ignored, misunderstood, or misrepresented. The main thesis of this book is that there are many different Castros. The most widely known is the symbolic, public one, as it has been portrayed in official Cuban propaganda, Castro-friendly biographies, and mainstream American media. But there are also many secret Castros, highly different from the public one. The Secret Fidel Castro focuses on little known aspects of Castro's personality, important in the better understanding of the man and his actions?what really makes him tick.

Book excerpt: Our Hindustan or say India is in eclipse we do not know what will happen to it in future if the birth rate of minorities is getting increased 9% to 15% where as Hindu Population has come down from 93% to 85% since Independence. Hence I call the present generation or youth to adapt a policy of enforcement of Uniform Law and order in the wake call our country as Hindustan. Minority people should not be given any weight in field of administration as is done to Hindus in Pakistan or other Muslim countries. Even China has recently banned long beards and veil for Muslim woman ,Madarasas (Muslim Institutions) and conversion. Those (non-Hindus) who want to continue to stay in India/Hindustan should adopt HINDUNESS or else ask them to leave the country and settle in Muslim countries. They should adopt Hindu Nationalism. A new syllabus on Nationalism should be curriculum in Educational System "Too much tolerance and wooing Muslims for the sake of Vote Bank needs ban and for this electioneering system should be amended"
