Book excerpt: In this collection of interviews with American Christian poets, published on the web by Church of England Newspaper, London, the ongoing series represented here includes Susan Wheeler, Philip Kolin, and Peter Cole, among others. Though a Christian collection, the secular Jewish poet and translator of note Peter Cole is included. Susan Wheeler teaches at Princeton, and Philip Kolin at University of Southern Mississippi. Each was interviewed in this ongoing series, still going on, by Religion Writer Peter Menkin. This is a living series. Philip Kolin has once again heard the whisper of Gods word with the ear of his heart and given poetic expression to the timeless value of that word. From: Interview: Christian poet Philip Kolin of Mississippi, USA lives his faith, telling readers here of his workeverything you ever wanted to know ...Just this transpired. Against a tree I swooned and fell, and water seeped into my shoe, and a dream began to grow in me. Or despair, and so I chose the dream. And while I slept, I was being fed, and clothed, addressed as though awake with every faculty, and so it went. Then: blaze, blare of sun after years uncounted, and synesthesia of it and sound, the juncos chirp and then the jays torn caw... Susan Wheeler From: Interview: Poet Susan Wheeler of New York City and Princeton University The mystic, poet, secular Jewish married man of letters who is a scholar is reticent to use the word God in an interview, and even reticent to admit to a belief in the Almighty. Yet this religious and spiritual scholar and poet has a recent book of translations of works from the Kabbalah in the book titled The Poetry of Kabbalah: Mystical Verse from the Jewish Tradition. This ancient discipline of understanding the Almighty in the Jewish tradition is a mystical and mysterious exercise in religious practice that continues into our own daythis 21st Century. Peter Cole From: Interview: Peter Cole, Jewish poet/translator gives his stark answers to questions in this ongoing series

Book excerpt: Hymns of the Early Church : Being translations from the poetry of the Latin church, arranged in the order of the Christian year The Latin poetry of the Christian Church presents a tempting field for the exercise of scholarship and research. The relation in which it stands on the one hand to the classic poetry of Greece and Italy, and on the other to the Liturgies of the Eastern Church, the placing of accent in the room of quantity, and the rise and growth of rhyme—these and such-like matters will always prove attractive to experts and specialists. They are, however, quite beyond the scope of this brief paper. Those who wish to make an exhaustive study of a subject which has many sides and a copious literature, would do well to betake themselves to such standard works as are noted below. The general reader may find something to profit and to interest him in the following general survey. The title placed on our Saviour’s cross, setting forth His accusation—“Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews,” was written in three languages—in Hebrew and in Greek and in Latin. That collocation of languages gives the order in which the hymnody of the Church developed. Hebrew hymnody is contained for the most part in the Hebrew Psalter; for the distinction between psalms and hymns is not one that admits of being applied to all Hebrew poetry. Our Lord and His disciples, as they went out to the Mount of Olives after the institution and first observance of the Supper Sacrament, sang a portion of the Great Hallel, which consists of Psalms cxiii. to cxviii. inclusive. Their doing so is described in the New Testament as singing “an hymn,” just as the singing of Paul and Silas in the Philippian prison is said to be singing hymns unto God.

Book excerpt: Seventh-century Gaelic law-tracts delineate professional poets (filid) who earned high social status through formal training. These poets cooperated with the Church to create an innovative bilingual intellectual culture in Old Gaelic and Latin. Bede described Anglo-Saxon students who availed themselves of free education in Ireland at this culturally dynamic time. Gaelic scholars called sapientes (“wise ones”) produced texts in Old Gaelic and Latin that demonstrate how Anglo-Saxon students were influenced by contact with Gaelic ecclesiastical and secular scholarship. Seventh-century Northumbria was ruled for over 50 years by Gaelic-speaking kings who could access Gaelic traditions. Gaelic literary traditions provide the closest analogues for Bede’s description of Cædmon’s production of Old English poetry. This ground-breaking study displays the transformations created by the growth of vernacular literatures and bilingual intellectual cultures. Gaelic missionaries and educational opportunities helped shape the Northumbrian “Golden Age”, its manuscripts, hagiography, and writings of Aldhelm and Bede.

Book excerpt: This study presents the revolutionary thesis that English poetry and poetic theory were deflected from their richest line of development by the scientific rationalism that came with Hobbes and has continued its restrictive influence to the present day, when such poets as Yeats and Eliot have begun the reestablishment of the earlier line of development. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book to discern and spell out the fascinating coalescence of churches in America today. Drawing on mainline Protestantism, the newer evangelicalism, and Roman Catholicism, this new community, or "community of communities," may be called a "public church" because it is particularly sensitive to the public order and to the interplay of its members as citizens and church people. In a world of increasing interreligious tensions and in an America growing weary of pluralism and freedom, the public church both fills a void and counters trends at home and abroad. Grounded in an historical understanding of the Christian churches in America, The Public Church draws on biblical, theological, and political motifs to offer a model for self-understanding and mission in the years ahead. It discusses the nature of the public church, its relation to the individual traditions from which it springs, its continuing reliance on the local congregation, its relation to the New Christian Right, and the political balance between left and right that must be maintained if the public church is to grow even more effective as a religious force and as a humane venture. In short, the book is an analysis of American Christianity in its newest and most exciting phase.
