Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Knowledge transmission and generation belong to the core mission of the public university. In democratic South Africa, the transformation of these processes and practices in higher education has become an urgent and contested task. The Faculty of Theology at the University of the Free State has already done some original work on the implications of these for theology. One area of investigation that has not yet received due attention concerns the role of theological disciplines, and especially the relation between academic disciplines and societal dynamics. This research project addresses the challenge and this volume reflects the intellectual endeavour of lectures, research fellows and a post-graduate student associated with the faculty. Each theological discipline has its own history and has already experienced reconstruction, both globally and in South Africa. Some of these genealogical developments and re-envisioning are mapped by the contributions in this volume. The critical questions addressed are: what are the contours of the (post)apartheid condition and what are the implications for responsible disciplinary practices in theology? The chapters convey an impression of the vitality of theology at the University of the Free State and in South Africa and give expression to fundamental shifts that have taken place in theological disciplines, and also of future tasks. This research project aims to stimulate reflection on responsible and innovative disciplinary practices of theology in South Africa, which, we envisage, will contribute to social justice and human flourishing. -Rian Venter, University of the Free State

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents the research activities of Evangelische Theologische Faculteit Leuven during the last four decades: a faculty with its location rooted in the heart of Europe and its nature connected to an international academic community. For 40 years now, ETF Leuven is a place where researchers from different cultural and denominational backgrounds and different parts of the world engage in evangelical theology. Through an Introduction and no fewer than eighteen chapters, this volume shows how ETF Leuven fosters a connection between academic research and faithful engagement with faith communities. Each of its six departments discusses past research activities and presents two samples of current research. Nevertheless, the different contributions do not just inform the reader about the essential mission of a theological faculty. This volume offers much more. Taken together, the contributions reflect the vitality of evangelical, and more broadly Christian theology as a benefit to both church and society, particularly in a time when academic theology seems to be vulnerable. The volume includes a foreword by Prof. Miroslav Volf, who interprets the narrative of ETF Leuven within the larger field of academic theology.

Book excerpt: Most of the papers in this volume originated as presentations at the conference Biblical Hebrew and Rabbinic Hebrew: New Perspectives in Philology and Linguistics, which was held at the University of Cambridge, 8–10th July, 2019. The aim of the conference was to build bridges between various strands of research in the field of Hebrew language studies that rarely meet, namely philologists working on Biblical Hebrew, philologists working on Rabbinic Hebrew and theoretical linguists. This volume is the published outcome of this initiative. It contains peer-reviewed papers in the fields of Biblical and Rabbinic Hebrew that advance the field by the philological investigation of primary sources and the application of cutting-edge linguistic theory. These include contributions by established scholars and by students and early career researchers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edition of rabbinic parables (meshalim) in the two Mekhiltot, the tannaitic Midrashim to the book of Exodus (3rd century CE), has a double scholarly purpose. It offers a critical synoptic presentation and study of the textual witnesses of the parables, and a commentary on their meaning and function in their literary and historical context. Moreover, a new English translation of every parable will make the edition a useful tool for interested readers with less knowledge of Hebrew, or those merely looking for a quick reference. This edition, which intends to be the first in a series of editions of parables in all the tannaitic works, is an indispensable tool not only for scholars of Jewish texts, but also for students of the New Testament and early Christian literature, historians of religion in late Antiquity, and those interested in similar literary genres, such as fables.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Maybe we should read Genesis 37–50 as the story of Joseph and Judah. Both kept their families alive and received major blessings from their father Jacob. Like his brother Joseph, Judah knew how to use words to lead and persuade, primarily by appealing to common experience. His speeches model Kenneth Burke’s rhetoric of identification, “inducing cooperation” by showing his listeners how they are consubstantial—that is, where they stand together. Preachers hope to do the same, making gospel connections between ancient texts and life today. Circles in the Stream shows that the connections are there in the Scripture text, freeing preachers from the pressure to find contemporary illustrations. Adapting Burke’s literary-rhetorical approach to reading, Paul Koptak offers ever-widening circles of reading to that end. Indexing a passage and looking for identification there lead to the transformative purpose and life issue. Intertextual study, a combination of both, discovers these connections in the wider two-testament canon. Circles in the Stream offers both a distinct perspective for reading Scripture and practical steps for in-depth study. Its method can make sermon preparation more efficient and effective. More importantly, it leads to the life-issues that listeners want their preachers to address.

Book excerpt: Using the example of Ugarit, the contributions show the transregional relationships of a North-Syrian metropolis in the 2nd half of the 2nd millennium BC, which concerned not only the economic level, but also testify to an exchange on a cultural and religious level, in which different languages and traditions were not dividing but could stimulate one another. In addition to the many important individual aspects that the contributions deal with (in addition to mythical-epic traditions, the areas of wisdom and administration), the volume also sheds light on the exciting question of the relationship between local and transregional traditions, as they are particularly evident in the legacy of the elites of the time.

The volume also includes a German version of the public lecture on the significance of the Dead Sea Scrolls for the Study of Old Testament and of Early Judaism delivered in Dutch by Van der Woude during the symposium.

The events of exile and return made it impossible to completely fall back on the traditional religious identity. The essays in this volume try to reconstruct the path taken in that transition. The characters of Ezra and Nehemiah are generally seen as playing a formative role in this process. By reading texts from the biblical books supposedly written by Ezra and Nehemiah in a religio-historical context, new light falls on the process of change.
