Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is God still, as it has been argued, the "neglected factor" in New Testament theology? How does the Bible speak imaginatively and concretely about who God is and what God's activity on behalf of the world looks like? In The Unrelenting God sixteen accomplished scholars in the fields of biblical and theological studies explore ways in which Scripture speaks about God's character and God's activity in the world. As honoree Beverly Roberts Gaventa has done throughout her career, the contributors address important and nuanced theological themes such as God's dramatic invasion of the world in the gospel of Jesus Christ, God's ultimate triumph over the powers of sin and death, and humanity's ongoing participation with God in Christ. Scholars, students, and church leaders will appreciate this volume's careful theological interpretation of whole scriptural books and individual passages -- and its ability to model instructively how that interpretation is best done. Its uses are frequent and varied in understandings of politics, nature, and individual life-stories. Parallels can be discerned in other faiths. In this volume, David Fergusson traces the development of providential ideas at successive periods in church history. These include the early appropriation of Stoic and Platonic ideas, the codification of providence in the Middle Ages, its foregrounding in Reformed theology, and its secular applications in the modern era. Responses to the Lisbon earthquake (1755) provide an instructive case study. Although confidence in divine providence was shaken after 1914, several models were advanced during the twentieth century. Drawing upon this diversity of approaches, Fergusson offers a chastened but constructive account for the contemporary church. Arguing for a polyphonic approach, he aims to distribute providence across all three articles of the faith.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explores the relationship between the Mosaic law and early Christian ethics In this volume thirteen respected scholars explore the relationship between the Mosaic law and early Christian ethics, examining early Christian appropriation of the Torah and looking at ways in which the law continued to serve as an ethical reference point for Christ-believers -- whether or not they thought Torah observance was essential. These noteworthy essays compare differences in interpretation and application of the law between Christians and non-Christian Jews; investigate ways in which Torah-inspired ethical practices helped Christ-believing communities articulate their distinct identities and social responsibilities; and look at how presentations of the law in early Christian literature might inform Christian social and ethical practices today. Posing a unified set of questions to a diverse range of texts, Torah Ethics and Early Christian Identity will stimulate new thinking about a complex phenomenon commonly overlooked by scholars and church leaders alike.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Nicene Creed's powerful summary of Christian faith has stood the test of time, embodying core truths and distinguishing essential Christian teachings from those of lesser importance. As respected thinker and educator David Willis explores the Nicene Creed in this new book, he provides clues for meaningfully interpreting this most ecumenical of church creeds in the twenty-first century. Writing especially for educated laypeople, advanced students, and theological educators, Willis eloquently links the ancient creed to life today. As he points out, faith is constantly taking different shapes within broad boundaries like the creed's perennial truths, and even these truths need to be reinterpreted in each age to keep them intelligible and compelling. Willis admirably achieves this task for our day by elucidating the creed's statement of faith with analogies drawn from such diverse areas as architecture, graphic art, poetry, sculpture, and psychological theory. Those seeking to delve into the creed or to deepen a lifelong encounter with it will be enriched by Willis's reflections.

Book excerpt: World-renowned scholar Michael Gorman examines the important Pauline theme of participation in Christ and explores its contemporary significance for Christian life and ministry. One of the themes Gorman explores is what he calls "resurrectional cruciformity"--that participating in Christ is simultaneously dying and rising with him and that cross-shaped living, infused with the life of the resurrected Lord, is life giving. Throughout the book, Gorman demonstrates the centrality of participating in Christ for Paul's theology and spirituality.

Book excerpt: This book is written for those who haven’t yet discovered the brilliance, humor, humility, and awe-filled writings of C.S. Lewis. Maybe one who has read The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, but no other Narnia books. Or half of Mere Christianity and got side-tracked. Or has heard their pastor quote Lewis time and again and wonders “why?” Or thought: “what is the big deal about C.S. Lewis?” The author highlights the eight or ten most meaningful Lewis ideas that have transformed his life. Ideas such as “what real joy is” and “the presence of God in everyday occurrences” and “the secret to recovery of child-like wonder” and “the startling relevance of Lewis to today” and “how believing in Christ makes the most sense.” “I enjoyed reading this wondrous book about C.S. Lewis. It is ‘twice wondrous’ because it is a pleasure not only to read Rich Latta’s insights into C.S. Lewis’s books, but to enjoy the feeling that comes when a writer opens his heart so warmly as Rich has done. I decided I want what Rich Latta has uncovered in the second half of his life: the enjoyment of a new start in seeing and feeling the wonder of God. This enjoyment is God Himself: “more of God!” Rich writes. It is also a heartfelt awakening to all that is wondrous in the world that God made. Thank you, Rich. You have given the reader a gift of awakened wonder, theirs and yours.” —Bob Blincoe, PhD. President Emeritus, Frontiers

Book excerpt: Ryan and Selena Frederick were newlyweds when they landed in Switzerland to pursue Selena's dream of training horses. Neither of them knew at the time that Ryan was living out a death sentence brought on by a worsening genetic heart defect. Soon it became clear he needed major surgery that could either save his life--or result in his death on the operating table. The young couple prepared for the worst. When Ryan survived, they both realized that they still had a future together. But the near loss changed the way they saw all that would lie ahead. They would live and love fiercely, fighting for each other and for a Christ-centered marriage, every step of the way. Fierce Marriage is their story, but more than that, it is a call for married couples to put God first in their relationship, to measure everything they do and say to each other against what Christ did for them, and to see marriage not just as a relationship they should try to keep healthy but also as one worth fighting for in every situation. With the gospel as their foundation, Ryan and Selena offer hope and practical help for common struggles in marriage, including communication problems, sexual frustration, financial stress, family tension, screen-time disconnection, and unrealistic expectations.

Book excerpt: Since time immemorial, women have been the most consistently and universally abused people group on Planet Earth, as men in virtually every human culture have systematically, unrelentingly, and often violently dominated women . Unfortunately women of faith have also been virtually bound in chains of submission and gagged by demands for silence since the end of the apostolic era. God and Women brings serious biblical and historical scholarship to bear on the role of women in family, society, and church in an analysis of God's original intentions for women and for men at the moment when he created humanity. Whether you are a woman or a man, this book and the other volumes in this series will literally set you free, challenging you to think and to act on divine truths from the Hebraic foundations of your faith. You will clearly see God's original design and intent for women, and you will start tearing down prison walls that have deprived half of God's children of the freedom to pursue his gifts and calling in the family, in the society, and especially in the community of faith.
